H-E-double hockey sticks

Today it is hot with a heat index of 110 degrees.  I moved to the Northwoods to get away from this type of stuff.  What the h-e-double hockey sticks is going on?  The majority of people here do not have air conditioning.  It really doesn't have to do with economic status.  The richest couple we know here do not have it.  In the past AC wasn't needed.  Maybe a few days a year.  When we remodeled our place, the contractor asked if we wanted AC.  "You'll only need it 2 weeks of the year."  We said yes, we will use it the 2 weeks.  You can attribute the heat to global warming or to natural weather cycles.  Either way, we are using our air conditioning.
